The August 2010 issue of Himal Southasian magazine has a commentary contributed by me on the recent events in Kashmir:

When columns of the Indian Army drove through Srinagar on 7 July, rifles pointed out at the city, it was meant as a show of force; to tell its ‘mutinous’ population – and those watching elsewhere – just who was really in charge. Disconcertingly for the Indian government, it has had the opposite effect…

    I couldn’t help losing the distress of the past few days after reading- ‘The CNN-IBN correspondent, happily embedded inside an army truck as it made its way through Srinagar, was extolling the impact of the flag march (even as an official was busy denying that there had been any such thing). NDTV provided its usual high-wire balancing act, with Barkha Dutt dredging up the ‘pain on both sides’.
    Grim though the situation is, one needs to see the complete absurdity of its representation in the mass media to detach oneself from it. It’s still scary to see how determined the agenda of misinformation is on some networks. When asked about the troublemakers behind the agitation, the CM clearly states that though there are people who fish in troubled waters, the agitation is largely leaderless. This particular channel cuts the sentence, puts the first half – there are people who fish in troubled waters – insert asiya andrabii in all her niqabed glory and some gentleman with a beard- and go on reporting and confirming there own theory of culpability.
    Delightful as it is to read this article, one cannot take one’s eyes off the mass media reporting for too long.
