Jashn-e-azadi - How We Celebrate Freedom, a documentary by Sanjay Kak exploring the struggle for Azadi, freedom, and the conflict in the Kashmir valley. In 2007, as India celebrates the 60th anniversary of it's Independence, this provocative and disturbing film raises questions about freedom in Kashmir, and about the degrees of freedom in India.

sanjay Kak has boldly ventured into a field that angels would fear to tread. the hurdles, the threats and all the constraints faced are all evident in the film on kashmir. the hardwork of the team shows but what is the message, what is the film trying to show, what is the underlying theme, and what is it conveying. i am truly confused.

violence juxtiposed with entertainment, barbed wires, the national flag, the rhetoric of yaseen malik, the bhands, and the lone voice of hatash! is this all that is to kashmir..

the film has skimmed the surface of the quagmire called kashmir. three years went into its making but no solutions seem to appear thru the film. documentary fine, it is, but i felt there were too many issues cluttered in the film... from the royal springs golf course to the gulmarg rendezvous of the tourists..

believe it ...kashmir has come a long way...it is not the same.. i have seen it year after year, spoken to the locals, the pandits staying there, the muslims, the irish nuns, the sikhs, but everybody feels the change...
sanjay kak seems to have missed out on this positive change.

is the film just a medium for the militant point of view.. is just a poem narrated by hatash on a bad telephone line enough to convey the pathos, injustice and agony of millions of pandits scattered in the world.

wished sanjay had done a bit of xtra research, to enlighten the viewer on the paradise that was kashmir and the kashmiris that are responisible for it.
the film quality cannot be faulted but it could have done with some more editing.. better luck next time.

I live in the US, could you please tell me if you plan any screenings for the US? Or whether the documentary is going to go on sale?

Thanks,
Darakhshan
